Looking to replace your old bathroom toothbrush holders? With so many shape, color, and materials available these days, it may be tough to decide the kind that you want. Let’s take a look at the main types that are available.

Chrome toothbrush holder
Stylish, smooth, and trendy. Even better than the looks is the fact that chrome keeps bacteria to the surface and is very easy to clean. They are great for modern bathrooms that has other metallic designs for bathroom accessories.

Ceramic toothbrush holder
Another hard surface which helps to keep the holder sanitary and clean. White is a classic look that is suitable for almost any bathroom settings; from minimalist to more elaborate designs, you can’t really go wrong. Ceramic holders also come in many varieties of colors and shapes, from the typical four hole design to all sorts of animals.

Suction toothbrush holder
With suction cups at the back, these are very mobile and has the benefit without being permanently stuck to the wall. One innovative and appealing product is the Flipper toothbrush holder. Their holders are fun to use due to its patented mechanism that “opens and closes with the stroke of the toothbrush”. There are an assortment of cute animals to choose from and the bright, colorful designs are great for kids. Many users find brushing become less of a struggle with their kids and that’s invaluable habit to develop at an early age. For some, they even use it to keep their toothbrushes out of reach from their 2-year olds! Overall, an attractive product that’s definitely worth checking out, especially for children.

Wall mounted toothbrush holder
They are not much different from the chrome or ceramic holders, except they are mounted on the wall. If you like your things to be stationary, then they are definitely for you. One downside to these is they can be difficult to clean, especially ones with deep holes. In any case though, they are still a good choice provided you know how to install them.

Travel toothbrush holder
Usually lighter to carry around and have simpler shapes, these holders are for those who spend a lot time in hotels. They are usually plastic that protects at least the bristle, but I have seen disposable ones made of paper as well. Personally, I prefer my holder to encapsulate the entire toothbrush so the handle is not exposed. In a pinch, you can use the cup or tumbler lying around for most hotels. The Flipper toothbrush holder mentioned above can also double as a holder for travelling.

These are just the main types that you can find in stores, but they are are not everything. Each category mentioned contains numerous creative designs and in addition, there are still countless varieties with tumbler, glass, oil rubbed bronze, or even bamboo! If you are tired of your plain old boring toothbrush holder, you can start exploring the many available products today. Happy shopping.

Choosing a toothbrush holder may seem like a trivial exercise, but a few small yet important things should be considered before you lump it with your other shopping items. The most important being materials and shapes that may potentially be unsanitary.

The whole point of a toothbrush holder is to keep the toothbrush clean, so it makes no sense to purchase a holder that can be just as harmful. If the material is plastic, do some research to make sure it is not toxic. Be wary of the cheap plastic types found in dollar stores. Taking a health risk, albeit a small one, is not worth the few dollars that’s saved. You would also want to avoid ones that are made of porous material such as rubber and wood; they encourage bacterial growth due to the slight pores on their surface. Furthermore, wood can rot and should not be kept near water. What you want is something smooth and hard; metal, glass, and ceramic toothbrush holder are excellent choices.

The second thing to look for is the shape. Personally, I like holders with simple shape with large toothbrush holes and even surfaces so it is easier to clean. It becomes easier to collect dust and mildew the more complicated the shape and the deeper and smaller the holes are. I know the 4 hole types are quite standard, but they are also quite difficult to clean so be sure you can tolerate the extra effort required for cleaning. Another important thing: make sure the toothbrush bristles don’t make contact with each other. Cold virus can easily spread this way and in more serious circumstances, a person with a disease can also contaminate the bristles through blood and saliva.

Finally, once all the above points are covered, you can start looking at different styles and designs. This really depends on personal preference and if you already have good aesthetic tastes, you probably already know what to look for. If not, my advice is to take a look at the bathroom surroundings and find one that fits with the overall theme. A wall mounted or chrome toothbrush holder are also good options depending on your bathroom setting. For travellers, disposable kinds made of paper or anything light and inexpensive that protects the brush are great options for travel toothbrush holder. You can find more information on all the different types from my other posts.

To summarize, try to put in some thought when picking a toothbrush holder. Look for ones made of hard and smooth materials with an easy to clean shape. The functional designs are very important for your health, which is something you don’t want to compromise no matter how small it may be.

There are times when you want to remove your old wall mounted toothbrush holder from the wall, such as during bathroom remodelling. Whether you are looking to use a new holder or you reuse the one being removed, removing without causing damages to both the holder and the wall is not too difficult at all. No matter which type you have, a tile mounted toothbrush holder or one that’s screwed into the wall. Just follow these simple steps:

Tools needed:
- Screwdriver
- Hair dryer
- Putty knife
- Utility knife

For screwed wall toothbrush holder
1. Find the screws on the holder. They are usually located at the corners.
2. With the right screwdriver, remove the screws and make sure you support the holder at all times. Most of the time these holder use Phillips screws.
3. Be aware that the toothbrush holder may fall without exerting any force to pull. Otherwise, pull it carefully to take it out of the wall.

For tiled wall toothbrush holder
1. Use a hair dryer to soften the grout and cut the grout with a utility knife. Try your best to remove as much of it as possible even though you probably won’t get everything out. We want to make it easy to remove the toothbrush holder.
2. With a putty knife, slide under the toothbrush holder. You may need to exert some force here.
3. Advance the putty knife around the toothbrush holder and try to lever it up a bit. Keep moving around the holder until the putty knife can go no further.
4. Now move the holder up and down until it comes off the wall.

Note:
- If the holder won’t come off for the second method, it’s most like because it’s mounted with mortar. In which case, you would need to break the holder and chip the pieces away.
- Safety goggles are highly recommended because the holder may break or chip.

Like everything in your bathroom, you should clean your toothbrush holder regularly. It’s even more important than other accessories because toothbrush goes into your mouth and you want to keep it as sanitary as possible. For most holders, it’s very straightforward to clean, however, those 4 hole holders with deep, small holes require some special attention.

First, if you have movable toothbrush holder with no deep unreachable places, cleaning is a breeze. Just rinse with water and wipe away any dust or mildew. A sponge should do the trick and make sure you rinse again before drying it with paper towel. No chemicals should be necessary unless there are stains that won’t come off (which means you should clean more often).

An aside on cleansers: use something mild like regular soap or dish soap. Avoid anything harsh like bleach and ammonia that are harmful to your health.

Now the most difficult ones to clean are the aforementioned holders with deep small holes and also any wall mounted toothbrush holders; and if you have a wall mounted one with deep small holes, well, you’ve got your work cut out. If you have a non wall mounted one, the way to clean it is to add a little bit of soap into the holes and add some water, but don’t fill the entire hole. Let it the soap do its thing for a few minutes then start shaking the holder with one of your hand enclosing the openings. Rinse with water and repeat if you find it still dirty. Alternatively, you can use a stick, eg. a retired chopstick, and a piece of cloth to reach bottom. If you have a wall mounted one, the stick method with some soap is the only way to clean. Hopefully you can see that wall mounted toothbrush holders and small deep holes don’t make a good combination.

One more note, your toothbrush bristles should not make contact with each other because they can spread diseases to your family member in such unfortunately circumstance. It may sound far fetched but it’s always better to be aware and it really doesn’t take much effort. Just try to move the bristles away from each other if they are in close proximity.

Finally, it’s best to develop a regular routine for cleaning not just your toothbrush holder, but your entire bathroom. It defeats the whole purpose of having a holder if it’s unsanitary. It helps to have one that is easy to clean so keep this in mind the when you shop for a new holder.
